JOB PURPOSE/ JOB SUMMARY:

 

This position is focused on performing heat treatment tasks critical to the development of advanced high strength flat rolled steels under development and qualification for the automotive market.  This individual will have responsibility for preparing sample material, operating process simulators, communicating data and results to the research engineering staff.  Additional tasks may include: routine maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory test equipment and operation of mobile handling equipment.  Above all, the individual is expected to be able perform any and all tasks safely in an industrial laboratory environment.

 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (for non-exempt jobs, indicate approximate percentage of time spent on each responsibility):  
  • Heat Treating, Annealing, and Zinc Coating of material in various commercial process simulators.
  • Work in an environment of either cross-functional teams and as an individual contributor in the computer-controlled Simulators Lab and Heat Treat/Annealing area.
  • Required work tasks include operating and controlling, installing, troubleshooting and maintaining various electronic, mechanical, pneumatic, lab chemical analysis equipment. 
  • Safely use test equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, sample preparation and sample handling equipment, overhead electric cranes and forklifts, power tools such as punch presses, band saws, grit blaster, grinders, power shears, lathes and milling machine; sample degreasing chemical solutions; sample coating and steel composition test spectroscopy instruments; regulate and monitor flammable annealing gases and perform work with samples of hot steel and galvanized coatings. 

 

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • A two-year Associate Degree in Metrology, Instrumentation, Materials, Manufacturing, and/or Mechanical Engineering / Technology or 2 years of directly applicable experience is required.
  • Strong mechanical and/or electrical control aptitude and laboratory testing skill sets, including familiarity with the operation of computer controlled machinery and test/data logging equipment are required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as with a team, as needed to complete assigned tasks.
  • Focus on safety and environmental performance in laboratory and manufacturing environments.
  • Ability to use various devices including personal computers and laboratory notebooks to document work through test reports, enter test data in spreadsheets, and plan work with project engineers. 
  • Occasional overnight travel to U. S. Steel and customer plant facilities.

 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Work areas include office areas, high bay areas, and laboratory environments; commercial sheet and tubular steel production facilities as required.
  • Ability to use a full body harness for fall protection when doing maintenance on top of the Simulators.
  • Must be willing and able to comply with applicable safety requirements for both laboratory and manufacturing environments, and with all corporate and plant safety training, regulations and policies.
  • Must be capable of moving and lifting materials and tools as required for safe completion of job tasks.
  • There may be some overtime extending up to 6PM; the workday typically starts at 6AM.
